2027 Guide — Regulatory information verified as of September 2026.
The short answer: Spain’s international teleworker route is a distinct route for qualifying international remote work. It is not the non-lucrative route, and its financial test uses a different benchmark and formula.

What Is Spain’s International Teleworker Route?
This is the route commonly called Spain’s digital nomad visa. It is designed around qualifying international telework; eligibility depends on the current framework and evidence, not simply on calling yourself a digital nomad.
How Is It Different From the Non-Lucrative Visa?
The non-lucrative route is for residence without employment or professional activity. The international teleworker route addresses qualifying remote work. Do not transfer non-lucrative visa thresholds, insurance assumptions, or activity limitations to this route.
What Financial Means Are Required?
The international teleworker route uses SMI-based financial thresholds: 200% of SMI for the principal applicant, 75% for the second family-unit member, and 25% for each additional family member. Using the verified 2026 SMI, the references are €2,442, €915.75, and €305.25 per month respectively.
This SMI-based formula is distinct from the IPREM-based non-lucrative formula. The verified figures are reference values only; recheck current UGE guidance before applying.
Does Employment or Self-Employment Matter?
Yes. The current framework distinguishes employees from qualifying self-employed professionals. It also treats professional activity connected to Spanish clients under current limits. Confirm the current classification and evidence requirements with the competent authority rather than inferring them from a job title or contract.
Is This an Entrepreneur Authorization?
No. An international teleworker route, an employment authorization, self-employment, and entrepreneur authorization are distinct immigration questions. A business plan or remote client relationship does not by itself establish the applicable route.
How Should a Family Plan?
The controlled financial formula contains separate family-unit percentages. Determine the current household structure, relationship evidence, and financial documentation with the competent authority before filing.
What Should Americans Verify Before Applying?
Verify the current route, work relationship, source and format of evidence, financial benchmark, family-unit calculation, and application channel. Do not substitute a third-party checklist for current authority guidance.
