The short answer
Portugal’s D7 and D8 are different residence-visa pathways. D7 is the own-income route for qualifying retirees and people living from their own income. D8 is the remote-work route for qualifying remote work performed for entities outside Portugal. Neither route should be treated as a generic “Portugal visa.”

D7 and D8 are different pathways
The D7 question is whether the applicant fits Portugal’s own-income residence route and can document the applicable means of subsistence. The D8 question is whether the applicant fits the remote-work route and can document remote work and the route-specific income framework.
The two pathways should not be blended. Their evidence, purpose, and consular scope are different.
What happens after the visa stage?
For the remote-work route, AIMA describes a temporary residence authorization valid for two years from issuance and renewable for successive three-year periods. The residence-card stage is not the same step as the initial consular visa application.
Renewal is a separate administrative process. The current gov.pt service identifies AIMA as the authority and describes the ordinary renewal filing window. Check the current service before relying on a date.
What does continuity mean?
Portugal’s general temporary-residence rules include controls for unjustified absence: six consecutive months or eight non-consecutive months during the total validity of a temporary permit, subject to statutory justification and exceptions. This is a residence-card continuity rule, not a citizenship conclusion.
What about permanent residence?
Permanent residence is a later status with its own conditions. A five-year temporary-residence baseline does not mean that approval is automatic, and it should not be confused with nationality.
Practical planning boundary
Before choosing a pathway, map your source of income or work arrangement, household, consular jurisdiction, document period, and intended residence dates. This page is educational information, not individualized immigration, legal, tax, or financial advice.
